New York Fashion Week
And yes it is as cold as it appears.
Being stylish and keeping warm is no easy feat. I tell you this because I experience what you call the closet full of clothes but nothing to wear syndrome. Let me begin by saying that I truly dislike the cold weather and everything about it. So I find it very irritating when I have to hide underneath a massive bubble jacket in order to stay warm (I believe it is currently about 8 degrees at the moment). Let's be real... the cute winter coats don't actually keep you warm. While I don't want to sacrifice style, I also don't want to catch pneumonia so I am forced to find creative ways to layer clothing so that I am stylish yet weather appropriate.
This issue is never more important than during New York Fashion Week - some gals must have a hidden layer of down goose between the epidermis because I can't tell if the trembling is from the cold or sheer excitement. Uber will likely start dishing out its surge rates - so It's more convenient to take the subway but sadly we all know how stingy the MTA can be with the heat.
I have put together a fool-proof outfit that is perfect for a day out whether you are running to and from shows or going to work like the majority of the population (myself included). It's hard to find a pair of warm stockings for winter that stays in place, don't roll down (yes, you do look funny trying to pull those stockings up from underneath your jeans). I've tried many and have spent unnecessary dinero on nylon but I found that Uniqlo's Heattech Knitted tights are both comfy and warm, this is a must for winter layering. (A quick tip: In the AM I grab my tights and put them on the heater while I brush my teeth so that when I put them on they are nice and toasty).
After slipping on your warm tights, throw on a slim fit pair of jeans or leather pants - I have this theory that the skinnier the bottoms the less chance for the wind to creep itself up into where it is not wanted. Follow that with a tank, a long sleeve shirt, then a printed graphic shirt, a cardigan, and then a statement coat...this one happens to be a vintage gem from the 1930s!!
Throw on a pair of cashmere or wool socks (yes over your stockings... remember, layering is key and cold ankles are not fun) and then a pair of kickass boots that you can crush the ice in and avoid embarrassing slips along the way! If your graphic tee has a pop of color create some fluidity within your outfit and give your lips and gloves that matching pop of color as well.
Keep your kibble and bits warm and enjoy yet another season of #NYFW.
