The power of proximity (with receipts)

How many times have you seen an event or see someone have access to an opportunity and wished it were you?

It's happened to me many times, wondering, why didn't I get invited? how did they get access to be there?

And the truth of the matter is that proximity = access. Every single time I invested in myself and attended the right spaces, the right events, the right masterminds, the right group trips, it opened up something that I would never have access to otherwise. 💯

One of the many reasons why people choose certain universities is not just for the name alone, it's for the potential of the network that it opens up.

This also applies to your personal life, because who you marry is one of the most important financial decisions you will ever make in your life. Not many people will tell you that directly, and much of what we don't know is because we aren't exposed to those conversations or have access to the right environments to learn from.

I'm not where I am because of luck. I am where I am because of alignment. I am where I am because of hard work, grit, and the right circle of people who saw me and wanted to give me an opportunity. But if I stayed home, scrolling on social media all day, those people can't see me.

🧾 The receipts: After being fired from a job I really loved, I felt defeated. I ran to the next job as fast as I could, but I wasn't fulfilled there either.

Then one day, riding the train, I overheard a group of men talking about a tech conference. I'd never been to one before, and back then, over 20 years ago, the ticket felt expensive. $350 for an afternoon. But I decided to take a chance and try something new. I bought the ticket from the computer at my local library, and that's the day I met my first sponsor, a level above a mentor, who opened doors to spaces I only used to dream about.

That's what kickstarted my journey in tech. My journey to earning over $250K in my 20s. My journey to closing my first multi-million dollar deal. I still remember the feeling of signing that $1 million deposit check, and realizing for the first time that proximity is power. Coming from where I come from, access to rooms like that isn't handed to you.

Here's what mattered most. I walked into that conference wanting to learn something new, meet someone new, and let myself be seen. I wasn't focused on the price of the ticket. I wasn't focused on not knowing a single speaker's name. I wasn't focused on going alone. My only goal was to step outside my comfort zone and give myself access.
